Elgato Game Capture HD60 S captures raw HD video, and passes it on to your computer to be displayed, encoded, streamed and recorded.
It connects to your computer using USB 3.0, and relies on both the CPU and graphics card for the best possible performance.
Some rare issues that might occur include:
• Frame Loss
• Device Not Detected
• No Audio or Video
This article goes over each of these possibilities, and offers ways to resolve such issues.
Frame Loss
If Elgato Game Capture HD60 S is receiving fewer frames than expected, then it will display a warning message.
First, a yellow icon will appear, listing the lower frame rate.
You can click on that icon for more information.
A low frame rate can happen if your computer does not meet the minimum System Requirements for Elgato Game Capture HD60 S.
• Windows 10 (64-bit)
• 4th generation quad‑core Intel Core i5 CPU (i5-4xxx or comparable)
• Intel HD or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600 series graphics (or better)
• 4 GB RAM, built-in USB 3.0 port
• Internet connection
Please note that the minimum OS for Elgato Game Capture HD60 S is Windows 10, since it provides even better support for USB 3.x compared to previous Windows versions.
If the minimum System Requirements for Elgato Game Capture HD60 S are not met, then you may also experience other performance issues, including no audio or video, or no connection at all.
If you try to connect Elgato Game Capture HD60 S to an USB 2.0 controller, then you'll see an error message that say "Game Capture HD S needs to be connected to a USB 3.0 port to work properly".
Performance
High CPU usage can also cause dropped video frames. There are 2 scenarios:
• If Elgato Game Capture HD60 S is causing high CPU usage, you should try some steps to Improve Performance, as listed in this article:
https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028239871-Improve-Elgato-Game-Capture-HD-software-performance
Try to select a hardware Encoder (if available) for Elgato Game Capture HD60 S in the Advanced Preferences.
• If other applications are causing high CPU usage, then you should close them while you use Elgato Game Capture HD60 S.
Optimizing USB 3.x Performance - USB Controller Drivers
Make sure to install latest drivers provided by your motherboard or notebook manufacturer for the USB 3.x controller. This will ensure that Elgato Game Capture HD60 S is able to connect, and has the best possible performance.
Alternatively, install the latest drivers provided by the USB 3.x controller's chipset vendor (Intel, AMD, Renesas, ASMedia, Etron, Fresco, VIA, etc).
For Etron and VIA USB 3.x controllers we recommend to install these latest drivers from the manufacturers.
• Etron
• Via
Other controllers usually also work fine with Microsoft's drivers.
Optimizing USB 3.0 Performance - Try All USB 3.x Ports
Many motherboards have USB 3.x controllers from different manufacturers, therefore it's worth to also try to connect Elgato Game Capture HD60 S to a different USB port, which is internally connected to a different USB controller.
Optimizing USB 3.x Performance - Bandwidth
There could be bandwidth issues if too many devices are connected to the same internal USB hub or controller.
Disconnecting other devices or connecting them to different ports can help.
Optimizing USB 3.x Performance - Alternatives
If none of the above steps help, or there is no USB 3.x controller available at all, we can recommend the following USB 3.1 PCIe card from Asus for desktop PCs:
