In May 2024, Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs, which were launched exclusively on computers featuring a new processor architecture - Arm.
Arm is not a new architecture and has been around for many years; however, this is the first time Windows runs natively on Arm.
While Windows may run natively on Arm, the underlying difference in CPU architecture means that apps built for the x86 architecture require an emulator.
Arm processors can run apps compiled for x86/x64 through a software technology known as Prism. This translation layer is automatically enabled. Software running through Prism may experience issues and is not guaranteed to function 100% bug-free.
Note: Prism can run applications; however, emulating drivers, such as DirectShow, is not supported.
