After NVIDIA's introduction of new drivers on December 4, 2025, Elgato 4K Capture Utility is experiencing recording problems.
Elgato has identified an issue with NVIDIA drivers, version 591.44 and newer. Starting with the R590 branch, support for older NVENC presets and rate control modes were removed from the NVIDIA drivers.
This means older programs like 4K Capture Utility that use this NVENC data are impacted, especially when it comes to recording.
You may see an error message that mentions "Failed to Start Recording":
Our developers are investigating to see if an update can be made to 4K Capture Utility, but as Elgato Studio Software is replacing 4K Capture Utility, it may or may not be possible.
At this time, if you have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed, we recommend using Elgato Studio software, OBS, or other third party software.
The other option we have right now would be to roll back the NVIDIA graphics driver to a previous version, such as in the R580 Branch.
